Daniel Fields moves positions

It was reported near the 2009 draft that it would take seven figures and a promise to let Daniel Fields try his hand at shortstop to sign him away from Michigan. Mark me down as somebody who’d be curious to find out whether that report was accurate. If it was, I’d love to know what convinced him moving to center field was necessary.

According to Nick Underhill, that’s just what the Tigers are doing - moving Daniel Fields to center field. This move isn’t all that surprising and I’m not the least bit disappointed. I hadn’t read a single report about him that was optimistic about him staying at short. He’s just 19 and he’s already 6’2” and 200 pounds.  Judging from a shot of him during a Tiger broadcast after the draft last year, it wouldn’t be surprising if he was bigger than that already.

With that size, his speed and a strong arm he seems like a pretty natural candidate to slide out into center field. It’s a move both Uptons (and Robin Yount, if you want to go old school) have made and both of those two have retained a lot of value. To be clear, I’m not comparing Fields to the Uptons. I’m simply making the point the move isn’t necessarily bad news.

Tigers move DSL complex

Jason Beck has a story that the Tigers are moving their Dominican complex from Jose Rijo’s facility to one more conveniently located. The story made it sound like Rijo’s complex - already vacated by the other teams that had been using it - was kind of remote and they are moving to a complex in San Pedro de Macoris. It sounds like an improvement on all fronts. If the Tigers want to expose the facilities to intrepid bloggers who are curious about the goings-on of the Latin complexes, I have the contact information for one.

I don't understand why they are moving Fields to CF, we have a 22yr CFer as it is. Why not move him to third where we have nothing in the minors(unless Gaynor does better since it WAS a small sample size). I think Fields will develop as much pop as Inge and have the skills to stay there.

Because you always try to maximize a prospects talents, and moving Fields to center allows him to utilize all of his skills, including his above-average speed and strong arm. With prospects, you simply don't worry about things like having a 22-year old center fielder in the big leagues, when the guy you are moving has yet to play a professional game. You deal with that 'problem' when and if it ever arises 3-4 years down the line.
