Boston Takes Fien on Waivers E-mail

Casey Fien was plucked from the waiver wire by the Boston Red Sox. Some people probably view other members of the Tigers' 40-man roster as more expendable than Fien, but I'm not terribly concerned about this loss. The main reason is I seriously doubt Fien would have cracked the Opening Day roster for the Tigers. The Tigers appear to have too many other relievers in front of him on the depth chart. In fact, I'm not certain a couple relievers who aren't on the 40-man yet aren't better relievers than Fien right now. The one who comes to mind first when I say that is Robbie Weinhardt.

Now, it might make you a little nervous to know a very smart and well run club like the Red Sox were the team to take Fien. I say, "Meh". He's a right-handed reliever with good control and command. Perhaps they think his skill set is well suited to Fenway Park and an outfield that should be able to run down a lot of fly balls now that they've added Mike Cameron. Or maybe they plan to hold on to him long through March and hope he slips through waivers when the wire is flooded with activity later in the spring. Whatever Boston's reasoning, it doesn't change the fact that this isn't a big deal to Detroit.

Based on what he had done in the minors the last two seasons, I was excited to see him get called up last year. I'm disappointed that his Detroit stints didn't really work out too well. There is some bullpen depth that is starting to pile up, like Weinhardt as you mentioned, so the Tigers won't miss him. Best of luck to Fien in Beantown.

Even though Robbie Weinhardt, Dan Schlereth, Phil Coke, Cody Satterwhite, and a # of others will make us easily forget Fien, I don't like to lose players when they could have taken Don Kelly off the 40 man. Many players like the OF at Erie could fill Kelly's space better. They like his versatility, but I'd rather give the IF space to Brent Dlugach. It's my opinion, which I know most people disagree. Kelly was given a chance, but now it's time for others to get the space.

I'm at a loss when it comes to this viewpoint. You're arguing that Kelly would have been a better choice for removing from the roster, but that opinion seems to be based on a preference for a bunch of players (Well, Boesch, Strieby, Dlugach) who are already on the 40-man roster and therefore don't really have any role in a choice between Kelly and Fien. Kelly may well be useless on the Tigers' roster (though he may be the only potential bench player who can give them both another backup OF as well as a backup middle IF) but Fien was too given their depth in the bullpen. The only argument here is who was more useless between Fien and Kelly and since either's impact on the major league club will be marginal at best, we've spent too many words on the choice already.

Kelly's departure, as well as Clevlen, if he's still at Toledo, makes 2 spaces for players like Deik Scram,Brennan Boesch, Andy Dirks, and Casper Wells if he doesn't replace Austin Jackson in CF based on Spring Training. Because they don't need a relief pitcher space, if they keep the fillers out. I'd rather have kept Casey Fien than Kelly. However, if the Tigers don't believe in Robbie Weinhardt, they might have needed the space.Brent Dlugach is my answer to Kelly. Outfielders have to be clutch hitters, fielders, and sluggers. This ends my discussion. MANY thanks for your patience.
